A Serious Cup of Coffee.

One of the great coffee moments in Pulp Fiction comes not in a diner, but in Jimmie Dimmick’s kitchen. Quentin Tarantino himself plays Jimmie, whose morning has been rudely interrupted by Jules and Vincent arriving with a rather serious problem parked in his garage. Amid the chaos, Jules takes a sip of Jimmie’s coffee and marvels that it is “some serious gourmet shit,” noting that he and Vincent would have been perfectly happy with freeze-dried Taster’s Choice. Jimmie is unimpressed by the compliment. He knows his coffee is good – he buys the expensive stuff precisely because, as he explains, when he drinks coffee, he wants to taste it.

That little exchange is quintessential Tarantino: an everyday obsession inserted into an outrageous situation. With a dead body waiting in the garage, the characters somehow find time to debate the merits of gourmet coffee versus supermarket instant. And in the process, Tarantino gave coffee one of its most memorable supporting roles in movie history.

No Anthora cup here – the famous blue-and-white New York coffee cup belongs to another corner of coffee’s long movie career – but the message is the same: sometimes a humble cup of coffee steals the scene.
