Can a paper coffee cup become a movie star? The Anthora has built an impressive career without speaking a single line. Its familiar blue-and-white Greek design has appeared in Goodfellas, Men in Black, and The Wolf of Wall Street, while television credits include Friends, The Sopranos, and Succession. On cop shows such as NYPD Blue and Law & Order, it looks perfectly at home beside a detective’s paperwork or in the hand of someone working a very long shift. Its recurring role is clear: put an Anthora in the frame, and New York enters the picture.
“Put an Anthora in the frame, and New York enters the picture.”
Some props demand attention. The Anthora earns its place by looking as though it belongs there. Set beside a telephone, carried through a crowded sidewalk, or parked on the edge of an office desk, it suggests a life continuing beyond the camera. Someone stopped for coffee. Someone is running late. Someone has another hour of paperwork before heading home. A humble paper cup supplies the everyday texture that makes a fictional world feel inhabited.
Introduced in 1963, the Anthora is especially effective when filmmakers turn back the clock to the New York of corner diners, yellow taxis, and coffee ordered regular. In *Mad Men*, its presence helps furnish the everyday world surrounding the carefully tailored suits and Madison Avenue offices. It is the sort of small detail viewers may register before they consciously notice it: familiar, believable, and entirely at ease in the scene.
The cup carries that familiarity into stories set decades later, too. Characters may inhabit very different worlds, but a takeout coffee gives them something recognizable to do with their hands. Between dramatic confrontations and important decisions, there is still time for a sip. No trailer, dressing room, or star billing required—just fill the cup with coffee and let it steal a little of the scene.
At NY Coffee Cup, we celebrate the Anthora’s story wherever it unfolds—from a neighborhood deli counter to a close-up on screen. Preserving this New York original means keeping its familiar design and everyday purpose alive. You don’t need a film crew to enjoy its most enduring role: bringing a little of the city to your morning coffee.
